Why Use Harrisons?
So, why choose Harrison's over other brands? Chemical insecticides, herbicides and fungicides, artificial preservatives, colourings, sweeteners and flavourings can all be harmful to a bird's health. Harrison's diets contain none of these and are 100% organic. The ingredients are all premium whole grains, approved for human consumption and certified organic by the US Department Of Agriculture. Harrison's Bird Foods have been scientifically formulated to provide all the nutrients a bird needs. A seed only diet, for example, lacks 32 essential vitamins and minerals - Harrison's provides these with no need for additional supplementation. This means no need for powders or drops where the level of uptake by the bird may be random and/or unknown. Indeed, the natural vitamins and minerals in Harrison's are scientifically controlled at the optimal level for your bird's health and needs and the addition of further supplements will unbalance this and may be harmful.
90% of avian disease is linked to malnutrition. Many diets contain food items of the wrong type, resulting in a lack of essential nutrients or, equally importantly, an excess of potentially harmful ones. Even offering a mix of foods can be flawed as many birds have the habit of buffet feeding, and will pick certain items from the bowl and not get the full range of foods necessary to get a nutritional balance.
This nutritional imbalance can cause minor ailments, but can also bring about fatal diseases. Birds fed on an inadequate diet may survive, but they certainly will not thrive.
Harrison's Bird Foods were developed by esteemed American avian veterinarian Greg Harrison to meet the needs of the modern educated bird owner who knows the importance of a formulated diet in preventing malnutrition and combating disease and death in companion birds.

Juvenile Hand Rearing Formula
Harrison's Juvenile Formula is a nutritionally complete diet for  the hand-feeding of large psittacine chicks from day one and other baby parrots over seven days of age until weaning (see chart above)

This formula should not be used in cockatiels under 21 days of age.

Special uses: In common with Recovery and Neonate formulas, Juvenile formula can be used as a digestive aid, for hospitalised birds that require supplemental feeding; birds with beak injury; tube feeding for diet conversion of extremely stubborn birds.
Nutritious formula for hand-feeding psittacine chicks until weaning.
• Can be used following post-hatch feeding of Neonate Formula for selected parrots (see below).
• Supports birds recovering from illness or injuries that may need supplemental feeding and birds that are losing weight during a diet conversion.

Feeding Directions:
Caution: The correct feeding technique must be used in order to prevent injury to the bird or inhalation of the formula that could result in pneumonia or death.

Species:
• From day 1 for pionus, African greys, Amazons, cockatoos, conures and macaws.
• From day 7 for other parrots.
• From day 21 for cockatiels.

• Step 1: Gently feel the crop to determine that it is almost empty before feeding.
• Step 2: Mix fresh: Juvenile Hand-Feeding Formula and bottled “drinking water” heated to approximately 103°F (39°C). Follow proportion of formula to water as directed by your avian veterinarian for the age of your bird. Do not microwave. Allow to cool to lukewarm. Chicks with their eyes opened should be fed 3-4 times daily, and birds with feathers emerging, 2-3 times daily.

• Step 3: Feeding with an irrigation syringe is probably the most universally successful technique. As one faces the bird, position the syringe to enter the oral cavity from the left side of the bird’s beak and direct it toward the right side of the bird’s neck. Deposit the food into the bird’s mouth and, as it swallows, the normal feeding response closes off the trachea and prevents aspiration of the formula into the lungs.
• Step 4: Feed the bird until the crop is full but not overstuffed, and clean the excess formula from the bird’s beak, feathers and enclosure.

Feeding Suggestions
• One- to seven-day-old birds and birds with slow crop-emptying may benefit from adding a pinch of HBD’s Avian Enzyme to the Formula just prior to feeding.
• To aid weaning after 21 days of age, add 1 Tbs finely chopped High Potency Formula or finely chopped organic nuts to 1 cup of Formula or introduce dry High Potency Formula in a separate bowl.

Recovery Formula
Harrison's Recovery Formula provides an easily assimilated source of nutrients for ill avian patients (passerines and psittacines).

Indications:
* When anorexia has slowed gastrointestinal emptying time. Not for cases of illeus or stasis.
* As a dietary transition for recovering patients that have been on a seed diet and need nutritional support.
* Medical and surgical patients that are recovering from pansystemic failure and have progressed to a point where oral, easily digested diets are indicated.
For debilitated or injured birds use as gavage (tube) mix until the bird is self feeding.
For those dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned nestlings, Recovery Formula is ideal as a hand-feeding diet from hatching to fledging of small insectivorous birds with an apparent inability to digest cornstarch.
• Easily assimilated source of nutrients for all birds needing special care until they are eating on their own.
• For medical and surgical patients that are recovering from pansystemic failure and have progressed to a point where an oral, easily-digested diet is indicated.
• Can be used to support a bird through the transition phase of a diet change that needs nutritional support.
• For birds in which anorexia has slowed gastrointestinal emptying time; not for cases of ileus or stasis.
• Also used as a handfeeding diet for growth from hatching to fledging of small insectivorous birds with an apparent inability to digest cornstarch. Species include bushtits, wrentits, vireos, wrens & smaller flycatchers and warblers.

Feeding Directions
Caution: The correct feeding technique must be used in order to prevent injury to the bird or inhalation of the formula that could result in pneumonia and death. If using a non-metal or flexible tube, be sure that the bird does not damage the tube.

Step 1: Gently feel the crop to determine that it is almost empty before feeding.
Step 2:
Mix fresh: 1 part dry formula to 1-3 parts bottled “drinking water” heated to approximately 103°F (39°C). Do not microwave. Allow to cool to lukewarm.
Step 3:
Feeding with a tube is probably the most universally successful technique. As one faces the bird, position the tube to enter the oral cavity from the left side of the bird’s beak and direct it toward the right side of the bird’s neck. Deposit the food into the bird’s crop.
Step 4: Feed the bird until the crop is full but not overstuffed and clean the excess formula from the bird’s beak, feathers and enclosure. Repeat as often as needed to maintain or increase the bird’s body weight.
